On Monday, Chris Brown released a video online apologizing for his assault on Rihanna, for which he received five years of probation in a plea deal last month.

"What I did was inexcusable," Brown said in the clip, explaining that his lawyers had kept him from speaking publicly about the incident, though he has repeatedly apologized to Rihanna and has expressed remorse for his actions. "I am very sad and very ashamed at what I have done. My mother and my spiritual teachers have taught me better than that."

After seeing the video, some of Brown's fans applauded him for his honesty and candor.

"I am so proud of Chris right now! That had to be one of the hardest things he has or will ever do, to face your critics and seek forgiveness," Tracie commented on MTVNews.com.

"It shows so much courage and humility," Ben added.

"He ain't perfect," KonyakZero wrote. "Give the kid a break. Now, if he does it again, that's a different story. Second chance, people."

Though some accused Brown of reading from cue cards in the clip, they acknowledged the humility that was on display. "This young man is only 20 years old," Kimmyanita commented. "This is a lesson he has to learn from. People are so harsh on people when they make a mistake, remember he is human."

But there were just as many who felt Brown's statement was tardy and insincere. "I'm glad he apologized, but in my opinion, public apologies mean nothing. He says he will never do it again. Well, I guess we'll have to see what happens behind closed doors," Diva4real5291 wrote. "But I'm happy he said something."

Others were more cynical. "Day late and dollar short. Do I smell a first single coming from a new album?" Maxie wondered.

"I'm not feeling it," Keekee said. "His career is tanking, so it's time to fix it before it's too late."

"This apology is coming after he tried to plead not guilty," unome_djd wrote. "I'm sure that he has given [Rihanna] a sincere apology and I commend that, but this two-minute apology isn't getting it for me."

Few weighed in on how this would affect their opinion of Brown's music, though it was the last straw for sonrisas_101, who wrote, "Blah blah blah. He's still wrong for what he did, and like Oprah said, HE WILL DO IT AGAIN. Never again will I support him by listening to or purchasing his music."

Brown is currently working on his mandated community service and attending classes about domestic abuse. He has been working on a new album called Graffiti, which is expected to come out later this year.
