Last-minute bid by dermatologist Arnold Klein creates confusion.By Gil Kaufman

The first part of Monday's (August 3) pivotal hearing on Michael Jackson's affairs was expected to be a cut-and-dried ruling by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff on a child-custody arrangement worked out between the late singer's mother, Katherine, and his ex-wife, Debbie Rowe.

But, according to an Associated Press account, while Beckloff did approve Katherine Jackson's permanent guardianship petition for Prince Michael, 12, Paris Michael, 11, and Prince Michael II, 7, as well as a bid by Rowe to have regular visitation with her two children with Jackson, a wild card threw things into turmoil at the day's start.

Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Arnold Klein, a longtime friend and doctor to Jackson, raised what were described as "nonspecific objections" to the custody arrangements, making for a few tense moments in the courtroom. A lawyer for Klein, who has denied reports that he is actually the biological father of the two eldest children — Rowe worked as Klein's nurse for a number of years, meeting and befriending Jackson during his many visits to the office — said the objections were based on the doctor's long-term relationship with Jackson and his children. Last month, on Larry King's CNN show, Klein said that "to the best of my knowledge," he was not the father of the children.

"Legally, he is not a presumed parent," said Klein's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, explaining that as a friend, Klein had serious concerns about the children's education and other parenting issues.

Judge Beckloff dismissed those concerns and said Klein did not have a legal basis to object to the arrangement agreed to last week by attorneys for Katherine Jackson and Rowe, but said he could raise another objection later if he wished. Jackson's 2002 will specified that he wanted his mother to take care of his children in the event of his death. According to the agreement reached last week, Rowe will be given visitation with the two children she bore during her marriage to Jackson: Prince Michael and Paris.

TMZ reported that Beckloff also agreed to grant Katherine Jackson an allowance for raising the children, which was unspecified, but was reportedly 83.5 percent of what Jackson requested. Katherine, who was reportedly being supported by Michael at the time of his death, was also granted a financial allowance for six months retroactive to the day Michael died, with the amount not specified in court. Rowe will have unspecified visitation rights and continue getting the same amount of spousal support she has been getting based on an agreement reached with the singer several years ago.

The court hearing continues this afternoon with lawyers facing off over Katherine Jackson's bid to be more involved in the caretaking of her son's estate.
