It's the biggest award of the night, and some of the biggest names in music are up for it. The nominees for Video of the Year at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards have been announced!
Britney Spears' "Womanizer," Beyoncé's "Single Ladies," Eminem's "We Made You," Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and Kanye West's "Love Lockdown" will all compete for Video of the Year, making this perhaps the most star-crossed category in recent VMA history. (Check out the complete list of this year's VMA nominees!)
Britney took home Video of the Year at last year's Video Music Awards with "Piece of Me," and Eminem has already won the award twice (in 2000 for "The Real Slim Shady" and again in 2002 for "Without Me"). Beyoncé, Gaga and West have never taken top honors at the VMAs, but they're no strangers to Moonmen. B has won six as a solo artist, West has taken home two and newcomer Gaga is yet to grab one, but don't count her out just yet.
The nominees were announced in a video message taped by VMA host Russell Brand on Tuesday, and though he's serving as master of ceremonies, he's not above playing favorites, if only for selfish reasons.
"Obviously, all these people are worthy nominees, but I realize that Britney perhaps wrote 'Womanizer' about me, so I'd like that to win," Brand said.
The outrageous Brit also promised to reveal more VMA news throughout the day on his Twitter account, RustyRockets.
And while Brand may have picked his winner, this race is too close to call. Can Britney repeat? Can Em take home Moonman number 3? Will it be Beyoncé or Kanye's year? Can Gaga shock the world and win it all? Well, it's really up to you ... head on over to VMA.MTV.com and vote for the winners in each category.
Then, make sure to tune in to the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, live, September 13 at 9 p.m., from New York City. Brand returns to host, and Taylor Swift, Pink, Green Day and Muse have all been confirmed as performers.
The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Nominees, celebrity presenters and additional performers will be announced in the coming weeks. To be the first to find out the inside scoop, follow the Inside MTV Twitter account at Twitter.com/InsideMTV.
