By now, you've probably read all about VMA house artist deadmau5's "cube," a high-tech, highfalutin bit of electronic bric-a-brac that will be prominently displayed during Sunday night's telecast.
But what you might not know is what's inside the cube — and, really, we didn't either. So when we caught up with the 'mau5 during his VMA rehearsals Saturday (Septmber 11), we decided to find out. We've got this thing covered from all angles, after all.
"We had an Orange Julius machine [in there], but we had to take it out because it kept tripping the breaker," he laughed. "And then, well, now it's just mostly analog equipment, framed photos of my cat. [It's] a little bit like home."
When we looked inside the cube to verify his claims — like we said, all angles — there wasn't a picture of a cat up there. But there was a whole lot of electronics, not to mention some supremely eye-catching LED displays on the outside. We were totally fascinated, but not as much as deadmau5 himself.
"I didn't really get the scope of it all until I walked into the rehearsal hall," he said. "[I] saw it all set up, and I was like, 'Damn.' "
Indeed. And while the cube is pretty great, it's only half of what deadmau5 will bring to the show. As the house artist, he's responsible for reworking hits from Travie McCoy, Jason Derülo and Robyn for a series of performances, not to mention remixing songs by the Black Keys, La Roux and others to be played in and out of commercial breaks. It's a pretty big job. Luckily, deadmau5 had some time in Spain to prep for it all. Sort of.
"I had no idea [who I'd be working with]," he said. "They were just like, 'Do you want to do this?' And I said, 'Yep,' and I didn't know what it was. And my management had sent me off to Spain ... and I was like, 'Well, whatever it is, it's probably going to be, like, a five-second cameo, so if they need me to do something, send my computer over,' " he said. "And so I get to Spain ... and they're like, 'Uh, yeah, you have to do eight remixes and three performances.' So what I had to do was take the cover off the hot tub and a mattress off one of the beds and, like, surround my computer. I had to make a little fort, because I didn't think that I would need a studio, but I really did."
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
