When MTV's 2010 Video Music Award nominations were announced last month and Eminem earned eight, he was not pleased, complaining that the September 12 scheduling of the awards ceremony scratched the quickly spinning record that is his tour schedule.

"Apparently, MTV doesn't care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMAs," he said. "F me, right?"

Well, we wouldn't exactly say that. Not that it matters. Apparently, Slim Shady could only spare enough time to open the VMAs. After his medley performance of "Not Afraid" and "Love the Way You Lie" (for which Rihanna joined him onstage), he jetted, literally — leaving the Nokia Theatre to catch a red-eye flight back to New York for his Monday-night gigs.

Guess he didn't think he'd win. Which he did.

Marshall Mathers' clip for "Not Afraid" beat both rap royalty and newcomers to take the Best Hip-Hop Video award. His competition: "Airplanes" by B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz' "On to the Next One," Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" and the mega video that was expected to take this category's cake — the Hype Williams-directed "Forever," featuring Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, himself.

Since Em had left the building, "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara, who presented the award, accepted on his behalf.

"I'm going to take it to Colombia," she joked.
