A few days before ChartAttack spoke to Josh Ramsay, frontman of Vancouver's Marianas Trench, the band hit #1 for the first time as their video for "Shaketramp" reached the top of the MuchMusic chart. The video was dear to the singer's heart because of what he went through to make it.
"It was a one-day shoot," Ramsay recalls. "I think it was 20 hours, and I was so sore by the end of the day because I was doing all of that ridiculous physical stuff all day.
"Every muscle in my body hurt the next day. My face was a little bit sore the next day, too. There is one part where one of the characters has to slap me in the face, and we had to do it so many times. It was early morning when we did that part, and it was cold and I was just getting slapped for half-an-hour. But it was still better than the last video, because in the last video I broke my wrist, so I'd rather just get slapped in the face."
Ramsay may be willing to put his body on the line for his group's music, but he won't compromise himself or his music. He's joined in vocal harmonies by drummer Ian Casselman, bassist Michael Ayley and guitarist Matt Webb. They all have enough faith in themselves and their sound that they refused to use Pro-Tools on their debut disc, Fix Me. They're preparing to get back in the studio this winter, and they'll maintain their hardcore stance against the digital recording process.
"Regardless of where we end up going, I am still not go into the thing of doing all of the Pro-Tools and fixing," says Ramsay. "We didn't do any of that on the first record and we are not going to do any of that on the second.
"I just think that stuff sucks the life out of it. I think there are a lot of people out there who, if they actually tried and didn't rely on that stuff, would be able to do it. There are a lot of people out there who are certainly good enough to do it. I think a lot of people just become lazy and say, 'That was good enough, we can fix it later.' I would much prefer listening to a performance by a singer, as opposed to a performance by a computer. It's not like Nevermind has any of that crap on it, and that album is awesome."
Ramsay wants the band to improve on what they created with Fix Me, and hopes maybe this time the music industry will come around and embrace them the way their fans have. Radio programmers have been less receptive than the nation's music station when it comes to support.
"I didn't really know about that stuff when I did the first record," says Ramsay. "These were just songs that I had written.
"I didn't know what radio station would play this. In the beginning, we had a lot of problems because rock stations would say that our stuff was too pop, and pop stations would say it was too rock-sounding.'"
