Being compared to Bob Dylan is intimidating, but not for roots-folk musician Josh Ritter. If nothing else, he's been able to parlay the comparisons into hotel rooms.

"I used to do these tours a lot, and they're the same amount of work, but kind of everybody crammed into one bedroom in a van," Ritter says with a laugh. "So you wake up and you look at your drummer… it's more than you want to see."

Ritter has been performing in support of his fifth album, The Historical Conquests Of Josh Ritter. In addition to getting hotel rooms, he also got to tour with Joan Baez, one of folk's most respected female artists.

Ritter says she told him that "when you stop caring so much about your music, the whole world will open up to you. You have the tendency to fight for a spot in your career and you'll never know if you got there or not."

In return for the philosophy lesson, Ritter taught Baez to play the Grand Theft Auto video game.

"I taught her how to play Grand Theft Auto on her tour bus for some reason. But it was pretty amazing. Like, the queen of folk music playing Grand Theft Auto. She also told me if anybody cut my hair they would go to hell."

Ritter's newest LP reveals much about his character, and the album's nonsensical title reflected his desire to lighten things up.

"Everything about the last record was so serious," he explains. "This record was about screw all that stuff and just go make a record that's fun.

"I thought of something that would be so big and absurd that you couldn't take it seriously. A lot of the stuff was written and recorded almost within the day."

Ram, Paul McCartney's first post-Beatles break-up album, was a strong inspiration for Ritter when his label, V2, folded while he was working on the album. Not knowing if he'd be able to recover the record, and suddenly funding everything himself, was daunting.

"This was a big moment for me," he says. "I was looking for examples of people that have picked up the pieces from confusing situations and continued to make art, and to try and make it at a high caliber, not just those stories of making a record to fulfill a contract. That just bugs the hell out of me."
