Just hours after reports surfaced in the New York Post on Thursday (March 12) that Chris Brown was unhappy with his management team, his crisis PR firm and his lawyer over their handling of his alleged altercation with girlfriend Rihanna, Brown's team responded and said the rumors are not true.
The Post, citing unnamed sources, reported on Thursday morning that Brown was upset and "looking for a whole new team" because the 19-year-old wanted to "apologize [for the alleged incident] much earlier ... and he was upset when the apology was finally released because it sounded so insincere."
But Brown's mother and co-manager said in a statement released on Thursday that the Post report was inaccurate.
"Reports that Chris is looking to replace his team, including [lawyer] Mark Geragos, [manager] Tina Davis and [publicist] Mike Sitrick, are false," Joyce Hawkins said in the statement. "There are only two people who could make a change at that level on Chris' behalf: his business attorney Kenny Meiselas and me — and neither of us were the source of this information." Spokespeople for Brown had not responded to requests for further comment at press time.
Shortly after the alleged February 8 incident, which resulted in two felony counts of assault and making criminal threats for Brown last week, Brown released a statement in which he said he was "sorry and saddened ... over what transpired."
The singer has not made any additional comments to date about the incident, but on Wednesday he withdrew from the March 28 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards show following a reported flurry of protests from parents.
Also on Wednesday, Brown's manager, Tina Davis, denied reports that she that she was the woman who sent the text message to Brown that sparked the alleged altercation.
Hawkins' statement added that Brown's attorney, Meiselas, informed TMZ, which broke the story alleging that Davis sent the text, that "the information they had was false." And, just to be sure, she reiterated, "So there is no room for doubt or misunderstanding, let me state unequivocally, that no change is planned or being made with respect to Mark Geragos, Tina Davis or Mike Sitrick. We are very pleased with the work they are doing." Brown is due to be arraigned in the case on April 6.
TMZ also reported that Brown and lawyer Geragos had requested an "unscheduled hearing" before next month's arraignment that has to do with Rihanna possibly testifying — or not — in the case. Geragos did not return calls for comment at press time, but Rihanna's attorney, Donald Etra, recently told MTV News that his client would definitely testify in the case if subpoenaed.
Jane Robinson, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles District Attorney's office confirmed that Geragos had requested the March 23 hearing, for which Brown does not have to be present, but said she could not comment on what will be discussed at the closed-door meeting.
