Ubiquitous pop star Justin Timberlake, awarded the quadruple threat award at this year's MTV Video Awards for his involvement in the worlds of fashion, music, dance and film, is now adding a fifth skill to his resume — sports. Timberlake will host this year's PGA Tour event in Las Vegas, which has been rechristened with the clunker Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals For Children Open.
"We will make sure to make this event unique and memorable, and we will raise money for charity while participating in the greatest game ever played," Timberlake said in a statement on Monday. "Raising money to better childrens lives while playing golf? I can't think of a better way to pass the time."
Let's lay down the law right now: no staged "wardrobe malfunctions" with John Daly.
Timberlake, who signed a five-year agreement to host the event, will be the 14th such celebrity host, joining the ranks of such music luminaries as Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and, er, Bob Hope.
The tournament, part of the Fall Series, will be held October 13-19 2008. As part of his contract Timberlake will host a concert the week of the event and play in the celebrity Pro-Am.
Timberlake, who competes in the PGA's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am each year, is in good company as a golfer/musician. Rock legend Alice Cooper has a well-publicized penchant for golf, while Peterborough's Three Days Grace play the game as a way to stay sane during hectic touring schedules. And this summer rockers Billy Talent hosted a golf tournament to raise funds for the MS Society Of Canada. Their approach shots probably can't match that of snowbird Anne Murray, though. The singer was recently named the top female golfer in the entertainment industry by Golf For Women magazine. Tea Leoni was ranked second and metalhead Celine Dion was third.
