In his first major awards-show performance on the American Music Awards Sunday night, Adam Lambert managed to steal the spotlight away from a galaxy of veteran stars with a raunchy spectacle that made global headlines. But the "American Idol" runner-up also quickly learned that when you push people's buttons, they often push back.
In addition to the more than 1,500 complaint calls received by ABC over Lambert's show-closing AMAs appearance — during which he kissed a male keyboard player, grabbed a female dancer's crotch, dragged another around by her ankles and mimed getting oral sex from a male dancer — ABC's "Good Morning America" announced on Tuesday (November 24) that it has canceled Lambert's planned slot on the show on Wednesday because of the controversy.
An ABC spokesperson told The New York Times, "Given his controversial live performance on the American Music Awards we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning."
Lambert, who previously performed on "Good Morning America" in August, will not be totally devoid of New York bookings, despite this cancellation.
According to Entertainment Weekly, he will instead appear on CBS' "Early Show" on Wednesday and on that network's "Late Show With David Letterman" that night.
A spokesperson for ABC could not be reached for comment, and a spokesperson for Lambert had no comment on the matter.
While Lambert did not comment on the matter on his Twitter account, the controversy over the controversy spawned an immediate Twitter meme, with the hashtag #ShameOnYouABC firing up the ranks of trending topics, helped by Lambert fan Perez Hilton's influence.
With the release on Monday of Lambert's major-label debut, For Your Entertainment, this week's sales numbers will be the test of whether all this Madonna-esque controversy will help the glam-loving power vocalist drum up more than headlines.
